Common Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know about overtime computation, overnight shifts, and timesheet data privacy.
How does this calculator calculate overtime pay?
In compliance with the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), overtime is calculated on any total weekly hours exceeding 40.00 hours. The first 40 hours are paid at your regular hourly rate, and all subsequent hours are paid at 1.5 times (1.5x) your regular rate. You can also select the California daily overtime option to calculate overtime on hours worked over 8 in a single day.
How does the timecard handle shifts that cross midnight?
Shift Time Card features built-in automatic midnight detection. When an end time is earlier in the clock cycle than the start time (for example, starting at 10:00 PM and finishing at 06:00 AM), our system recognizes this as an overnight shift spanning into the next calendar day. It calculates the full duration (8 hours minus your break) automatically without showing negative numbers or error messages.
What is the US 7-minute rounding rule?
Under 29 CFR § 785.48(b), employers using a 15-minute increment (0.25h) system round minutes 1 through 7 down to the nearest quarter hour, while minutes 8 through 14 round up to the next quarter hour. This standard simplifies payroll processing while ensuring that employees are compensated fairly over recurring pay periods.
Is my hours or wage information saved or sent anywhere?
No. Shift Time Card operates 100% on the client side in your web browser. None of your names, work hours, lunch breaks, or hourly wages are ever uploaded to an external server or shared with third parties. Preferences like your hourly rate and preferred time format are stored strictly in your browser’s local storage on your device.
